If there is one thing we love here at Vanity Towers, it’s the Sega Mega Drive! It takes us back to the days when gaming was simple and just, well, way better! (Okay, some may disagree with that but you can’t beat some good ole’ classics, ‘ey?) Here is our top five featuring some of those old-skool favourites!
ToeJam and Earl
There was always something about this game I loved, and I have many fond memories watching my older brother play it. It featured two main characters called Toe Jam and Earl, and you had to travel around the 2D map collecting presents and trying to get back to your home planet. I think I just used to think the presents were really cool and not really know what was going on!
Streets of Rage 3
This is still a visually pleasing game! From the disco scene (which I still think is awesome) to the extra difficult levels – it is my second favourite out of the three. There were complaints that it was too difficult which you do notice if you have played the other two, but it just makes it even more challenging which I think is better. If you have already played Streets of Rage then you’ll know the story is pretty much the same each time in one way or another, but for some odd reason it never gets boring. It’s a pity there wasn’t a fourth though!
What is better than riding your bike throwing newspapers into mailboxes?! Okay, there is more to it than that, but it was just so simple yet addictive trying to survive until Sunday! I have to admit, it isn’t one I played huge amounts of, but still a good game nevertheless.
Sonic The Hedgehog
Sonic will always be one of the most iconic Mega Drive characters. This was the first ever Sonic game I played and to this day I still love it. From the noises of jumping on the springs to the general theme tune of stage 1, it never, ever gets old!
Streets of Rage 2
This is my ultimate favourite game ever for the Mega Drive! I used to sit and play this game until the very end, making sure I beat the ninja guy and the boss before I lost my final life. It never gets easy receiving ‘game over’ right at the very end! The music is one of the best game soundtracks out there, and even whilst writing this I am humming the tune to them walking past the fair ground hitting punks called Gale and eating chickens! And let’s not forget those really fat guys who breathe fire with the names Big Ben or Buffet.
And the ones that didn’t make the list.
Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle. You get hit by a car and the noise of his ghost going up never leaves you! Such an irritating game…. But addictive.
Ecco The Dolphin. I still can’t make it out the first level.
